As many know, the class of 1974 turned the Big 50 this year. Throughout my time in school I was totally bummed out that I was always the youngest and smallest student in my class, but this year for the first time I was delighted to have my birthday on New Year's Eve.Why? Because each and every time I saw my classmates they would discuss the shock of turning 50, then they would turn to me and realize that I was still a young 49!Since this was a big number I decided that if I had to turn this age-which many say that 50 is the new 40 (sounds good to me)- I wanted to at least be somewhere exciting. For me, New York City is one of my favorite cities and possibly the most exciting city that we have in the states. The first time I was in NYC was on our Senior Class trip back in 1974- but this year's trip marked my sixth time in the Big Apple. No, I did not go alone....

Americans who live in warmer climates have some distinct advantages over those who live in regions where winter is a very real -- and very cold -- phenomenon. But residents in Florida, Arizona and Southern California don't have to be the only ones who enjoy pleasing temperatures while everyone else is shivering through long spells of cold. ....

As Hughes and her husband, Kemry, lounged on lush beaches and swam in their hotel's infinity pool, they sipped pumpkin soup and enjoyed couple's massages and reflexology. It was all aimed at enhancing the odds of babymaking during their three-day Procreation Vacation at the Westin at Our Lucaya Grand Bahama Island. It's part of the latest trend that has hotels around the world luring conception-minded couples by providing everything from onsite sex doctors to age-old fertility boosters promised to hasten the pitter-patter of little feet....

When Lucinda Hughes heard she would have to drink sea moss elixir while vacationing in the Bahamas, she was certain it would make her sick. Sure enough, three months later, Hughes is very sick _ every morning _ and expecting her first baby in April. She got pregnant after she and her husband went on a three-day Procreation Vacation at a resort on Grand Bahama Island. It's part of a trend in which hotels around the world are luring couples who are trying to have a baby. Resorts are offering on-site sex doctors, romantic advice and exotic food and drink calculated to put lovers in the mood and hasten the pitter-patter of little feet. Even some obstetricians are promoting the trend. Dr. Jason James of Miami said he often encourages couples trying to have a baby to sneak away for a few days, and he often sees it work....

Miami O-B-G-Y-N Doctor Jason James says he often recommends fertility-challenged patients book a vacation. He says de-stressing with your spouse away from daily life can actually aid in conception. And that's what hotels around the world are hoping conception-minded couples will do. Hotels are introducing procreation vacation packages, offering everything from onsite sex doctors to age-old fertility boosters promising to hasten the pitter-patter of little feet. At The Westin at Our Lucaya Grand Bahama Island, couples can sip fertility-boosting pumpkin soup and down sea moss elixirs. Lucinda and Kemry Hughes, of Washington D-C, went there over the summer. Lucinda was skeptical. But three months later, she's pregnant with her first baby. ....

Caribbean: What's new in the islands this fall

Beginning Jan. 7, American citizens flying back home from Caribbean vacations must have a passport. That's a big change from the previous rule, which required only a birth certificate and photo I.D. from Americans reentering the United States -- and it's coming under heavy criticism from the islands. 'The potential economic impact on [Caribbean islands'] business could be catastrophic,'' said Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, secretary general of the Caribbean Tourism Organization. ``This is a category 6 hurricane.'' What the islands fear is that many Americans won't get a passport in time to travel to the Caribbean, or worse, won't even bother to get one -- and therefore will skip plans to visit the islands. The new regulation applies only to Americans reentering the country by land or air, not by sea....

Parts of the country have already been teased by winter's icy fingers, prompting many Canadians to start planning escapes to warmer climes. Of course, no one plans a bout of travellers' diarrhea, hepatitis A, typhoid fever or malaria, but with one of these diseases affecting as many as half of all travellers to some southern destinations, new drugs and prevention techniques can be the key to an enjoyable beach holiday. If last season is any indication, more than a million of us will flee the cold for a week or two of sunshine and warmth in the tropics or subtropics, mostly at resorts in Mexico or the Caribbean. According to a recent survey from Léger Marketing, a Montreal-based independent research firm, Canadians tend to splurge on their vacations, with one-third spending an average of $2,000 to $3,000....
