Carnival Cruise official touts New Orleans as destination city
Posted Wednesday, November 15, 2006 11:26:52 AM by Blog57 Team
NEW ORLEANS Bookings on Carnival Cruise Line's Fantasy are healthy but a spokesman for Miami-based Carnival says the line still has work to do in getting the word out that New Orleans has returned to its status as a destination city. The vice president of sales for Carnival Maurice Zarmati says the challenge is getting the word back out. He spoke to a meeting of the World Trade Club of Greater New Orleans aboard the Fantasy. Two weeks ago the ship became the second home-ported cruise ship to sail from the Port of New Orleans in more than a year. Port President and Chief Executive Gary LaGrange says before Katrina, New Orleans was on pace to become the fifth largest cruise port in the country. Cruise lines often touted New Orleans as a prime cruise port because the tourist-friendly city had the advantage of offering two vacations in one....

As cruise ships get bigger, so do the stakes
Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 11:12:49 AM by Blog57 Team
Not only are new cruise ships more plentiful, they are getting bigger, and soon to be even more so. By the end of 2009 there will be 14 cruise ships weighing in at more than 130,000 tons, all built since 1999. Why are cruise lines building these ships with price tags of more than $500 million? It comes down to money - and competition. The rapidly escalating size of today's ships allows cruise companies to put more features that attract vacationers onboard their vessels. Royal Caribbean's latest megaship - the 158,000-ton Freedom of the Seas - debuted in June as the world's largest passenger ship and has steadily sold out. Innovations - such as the H2O Zone water park, the Flowrider surf park, cantilevered whirlpools that extend over the side of the ship 200 feet above the ocean, a full-size boxing ring and more - have upped the ooh-and-aah quotient considerably....

Disabled? Tell your cruise line when you book
Posted Monday, October 30, 2006 11:43:37 AM by Blog57 Team
Cruise-bound travelers with disabilities, especially wheelchair users, can't take anything for granted. While cruise lines profess to be wheelchair-user friendly, there are instances where they are not. For anyone with a serious disability who is interested in cruising, full disclosure of your problem to the cruise line or travel agent doing the booking is a must. Every cruise line has a toll-free number and guest-access specialists to help passengers with disabilities, whether it's a wheelchair issue, a hearing or sight impairment, or questions about oxygen for those with respiratory problems or other medical problems. Ask the cruise line or your travel agent questions until the answers are crystal clear to you and you feel comfortable embarking on a new experience....

Mired in darkness after Katrina left

NEW ORLEANS - I pulled into the Shell station on Magazine Street, my car running on fumes. I turned off the motor. And then I just sat there. There were other people pumping gas at the island I had pulled up to and I didn't want them to see me, didn't want to see them, didn't want to nod hello, didn't want to interact in any fashion. Outside the window, they looked like characters in a movie. But not my movie. I tried to wait them out, but others would follow, get out of their cars and pump and pay and drive off, always followed by more cars, more people. It was early August and two minutes in my car with the windows up and the air conditioner off was insufferable. I was trapped, in my car and in my head. So I drove off with an empty tank rather than face strangers at a gas station....

Cruise Ship to Set Sail From New Orleans
Posted Wednesday, October 18, 2006 7:10:07 AM by Blog57 Team
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The answer to a big question _ the future of New Orleans' cruise ship industry _ will begin to unfold Sunday when the first regularly scheduled liner to sail since Hurricane Katrina leaves the city's docks. Before Katrina, four cruise ships were homeported in New Orleans. The industry was rapidly expanding, with more than 700,000 passengers leaving and arriving in 2004 through the Port of New Orleans. But Katrina, which struck in August 2005, shut down the usually strong fall season. Only 308,000 passengers sailed from New Orleans during the first eight months of the year, according to the International Council of Cruise Lines, an industry group. The truncated year supported nearly 5,000 jobs in Louisiana as the industry spent $241 million, a figure that was still higher than the $208 million spent for all of 2004, according to ICCL....
