| | | Myrtle ready for a facelift | | Posted Monday, January 29, 2007 1:14:06 PM by Blog57 Team | | MYRTLEBEACH, S.C. -- The adage "what's old is new again" rings as true as the ocean tide these days along the Grand Strand. From the transformation of a legendary motel into a first-class resort at Sea Island on the Beach, to tantalizing redevelopment possibilities at the former Pavilion site in the city centre, Myrtle Beach is borrowing on its past to forge a fun-filled future. SIZZLING As the sunset on a sizzling South Carolina summer, a cornerstone of area tourism faded into the history books, as Myrtle Beach Pavilion hosted its farewell fling. The summer time amusement park was forsaken as part of a wide-ranging plan to revitalize the city's dingy downtown boardwalk area by effectively creating a year-round tourism draw. Exactly what will materialize (there have been rumours of a Disney-style park and condos) has yet to be determined.... | |

| | | 20 Percent Dip Seen In CEO Departures From Last Month | | Posted Wednesday, November 08, 2006 11:28:01 AM by Blog57 Team | | NEW YORK -- Another 122 corporate chief executives left their jobs last month -- down nearly 20 percent from a record-setting 152 departures the month before. Challenger, Gray and Christmas, the outplacement firm that tracks CEO departures, said 1,234 CEO changes have occurred so far this year, 11 percent more than in 2005. The company says with just two months to go, the pace of turnover virtually guarantees that the year-end total will surpass last year's record 1,322 CEO changes. Corporate heads leave for a variety of reasons, including retirement or moves to other companies. But Challenger, Gray and Christmas points out that in October, seven left their posts because of the options backdating scandal. Since January 2005, 11 CEOs have resigned or have been forced to leave.... | |

| | | Start date for 2007-2008 school year remains a mystery in Palm Beach County | | Posted Thursday, November 02, 2006 11:35:47 AM by Blog57 Team | | Circle the afternoon of June 1, 2007, as the official start of a long summer break for Palm Beach County students. But that's where the certainty ends, as the calendar for the next school year mostly remains a mystery. The first day of school will be either Aug. 20 or Aug. 22 because of a new state law that bars school from starting more than 14 days before Labor Day. It'll be the latest opening for county public schools in at least a decade. That means family vacations can run deeper into August, kids have more time for out-of-state camps and schools may save money on utility bills. "A lot of parents are really happy about the late start," said Jackie Martin, a mother of three who serves on a committee of parents, administrators and teachers drafting the 2007-2008 school calendar.... | |

| | | Local tourism budget gets boost from state | | Posted Friday, October 27, 2006 1:25:48 PM by Blog57 Team | | State tourism officials have agreed to match the $100,000 raised by the Brunswick County Tourism Development Authority, leaving a budget of $200,000 to promote spring and fall golfing vacations in Brunswick County. The multi-media campaign to attract visitors is the first regionally and seasonally targeted effort using matching funds, county officials announced Tuesday. "Brunswick County has long been known for outstanding golf," said Kemp Causey, the tourism authority’s chairman, adding "but people tend to weave golf into family vacations during the summer, or play our courses while staying elsewhere in the spring and fall. This campaign is about getting golfers to plan their entire golf vacation in North Carolina’s Brunswick Islands." While extending the lucrative vacation season beyond summer to include the "shoulder seasons" of spring and fall, golfers also tend to spend well while playing.... | |
